Farmspace Barnsley CIC is a safe, supportive and inclusive place where children and young people can learn, grow and build confidence in their own way. We provide alternative education for children and young people who are unable to access mainstream school, offering practical, hands-on learning in a welcoming environment where individual needs are understood and celebrated. Alongside our alternative provision, we run after-school confidence-building clubs, including our Big Farmers project, as well as holiday activities and support for children and young people with SEND. We work closely with children, families, parents and carers, schools and other professionals to provide positive experiences, develop confidence and social skills, encourage independence and help every young person recognise their strengths and potential.
Our provision is designed around the individual needs, strengths and aspirations of each young person. As a specialist Alternative Provision, all placements are carefully considered to ensure that Farmspace can provide the appropriate level of support and that the environment is suitable for the child.
Home-educated children may benefit from Farmspace through:
Our approach is trauma-informed, relational and person-centred. We focus on helping young people develop confidence, resilience and a sense of achievement through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
Farmspace Barnsley CIC works with children and young people who may need an alternative approach to education and support. Referrals to our alternative provision can be made through schools, local authorities and other appropriate professionals, depending on the individual circumstances and needs of the child or young person. We work with families and professionals to understand each young person’s needs and identify whether Farmspace is the right environment for them. We also welcome home-educated families who wish to access our activities and support on a self-funded basis. This may include our confidence-building clubs, practical learning opportunities, holiday activities and SEND support. We aim to make the referral and access process straightforward, with an initial conversation to understand the child or young person and how we can best support them.
Since Beau started attending, her confidence has grown significantly. She eagerly looks forward to her visits to the farm and gets excited the day before, which is wonderful to see as it brings out a bit of Beau’s spark again. Beau absolutely loves Kelly and all the animals on the farm. I am incredibly grateful for everything Kelly does for Beau and the other students. She is truly a kind-hearted person, and we are so fortunate to have her behind the program.

Since joining Farmspace, Harrison’s behaviour and focus have shown significant improvement. He is now more settled at the farm, able to concentrate, and is acquiring new skills. He has accomplished tasks he never thought possible, such as lambing, which he wouldn’t have been able to achieve without the provision. Harrison eagerly looks forward to his time at Farmspace every week, and despite challenging weather conditions, he always expresses a strong desire to attend.
