At Farmspace, we believe children learn best when learning is hands-on, active and purposeful. Our provision combines practical experiences, outdoor learning and education, helping children develop knowledge, confidence, independence and real-life skills in a natural and engaging environment.
Children have the opportunity to experience what it is like to work on a farm, taking part in real practical tasks and learning about farming, food production, nature and the countryside. Activities encourage responsibility, teamwork, problem-solving and independence.
Our animal care sessions give children the opportunity to learn how to safely care for and work around animals. They develop an understanding of animal welfare, responsibility and routine while building confidence through practical experience.
Children learn through growing, planting and caring for crops and plants. Our horticulture sessions introduce children to nature, seasons, food production and environmental responsibility while developing practical skills, patience and teamwork.
Our outdoor learning activities give children the opportunity to learn beyond the traditional classroom environment. Through exploring nature, working outdoors, practical challenges and hands-on activities, children develop confidence, resilience, physical skills and an understanding of the natural world. Outdoor learning also provides opportunities for children to work together, solve problems and experience success in a different way.
Personal, Social, Health and Economic education is woven into our practical activities. Children develop confidence, communication, resilience, emotional awareness, relationships, independence and an understanding of themselves and the world around them.
English and Maths are naturally built into our practical learning rather than taught in isolation. Children might use maths to measure, weigh, count, calculate costs or plan a growing project, while English can be developed through communication, reading instructions, recording observations, writing and discussion.
Harrison has been attending our farm sessions for the past 6 months. He was referred to us due to struggles with focusing on class and frequent disruptions that were affecting his learning environment. Despite being placed on report, his behaviour did not improve, and the school decided to place him on a partial timetable, with farm sessions twice a week.
Since joining our program, we’ve seen a remarkable transformation in Harrison. His behaviour has improved significantly to the point where he is no longer on report. He now approaches his time at the farm with enthusiasm and a strong work ethic, and he has become an invaluable asset to our small team.
Harrison is dedicated to his tasks, and his attitude toward learning and responsibility has positively shifted. We are extremely proud of his progress, and his past behaviour concerns are now a thing of the past. It's been a joy to see him flourish in a supportive environment that nurtures his growth, and we look forward to seeing him continue to thrive.
Testimonial from Harrisons' mum: Since joining Farmspace, Harrison’s behaviour and focus have shown significant improvement. He is now more settled at the farm, able to concentrate, and is acquiring new skills. He has accomplished tasks he never thought possible, such as lambing, which he wouldn’t have been able to achieve without the provision. Harrison eagerly looks forward to his time at Farmspace every week, and despite challenging weather conditions, he always expresses a strong desire to attend.
Beau was referred to our farm due to significant struggles with anxiety and a lack of confidence, which made it very difficult for her to access mainstream school. The school environment was overwhelming for her, to the point where she felt unable to even step foot in the building. She was referred to us in the hopes that the farm environment could help build her confidence and support her mental health.
Since joining us 7 months ago, Beau's progress has been incredible. Her attendance at the farm has been 100%, and she has consistently shown a strong commitment to her time at the farm. She is often the first to arrive and the last to leave at the end of the day. Beau’s hard work with the animals is admirable, and she has taken on a leadership role, often showing others how it’s done.
While Beau still struggles to access mainstream school, we are hopeful that with continued support, we can work with her to help her build the confidence necessary for future steps in her education. We are extremely proud of the progress Beau has made and will continue to support her on her journey.
Since Beau started attending, her confidence has grown significantly. She eagerly looks forward to her visits to the farm and gets excited the day before, which is wonderful to see as it brings out a bit of Beau’s spark again. Beau absolutely loves Kelly and all the animals on the farm. I am incredibly grateful for everything Kelly does for Beau and the other students. She is truly a kind-hearted person, and we are so fortunate to have her behind the program.
